Presenting our own perspective is usually much harder than just picking apart someone else's argument. When choosing our own perspective on a matter, we have to consider both sides of the argument and really think about every possible meaning of that argument before deciding for ourselves which sides we are on, if we even choose a side at all.
For this exercise, read the following statement:
“The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines.”
Answer the following about this statement:
1. Define heroes and heroines in your own words.
2. What do you consider to be the "character of a society?"
3. What kinds of heroes and heroines define your society?
4. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
5. Consider the reasons why someone would agree with this statement. Why would a person agree that the character of heroes and heroines reflects the character of that society?
6. Consider the reasons why someone would disagree with this statement. Why would a person disagree that heroes and heroines are a reflection of a society's character?
7. Could you argue that the statement is both right and wrong?

1. A hero is a male that gives of themselves to better mankind. A heroine is a female that gives of themselves to better mankind.
ReplyDelete2. The character of a society is what the people as a whole regard as important and a priority.
3. Service-oriented professions and the military define my society. Some examples are firemen, policemen, teachers, healthcare providers, and soldiers.
4. I agree with this statement because I think that the character of a society can't be defined by the small percentage within the society that have strong negative elements and lack of character.
5. Generally, the society’s chosen heroes and heroines reflect the character of the society because the people of a society usually choose their heroes and heroines based on character and action.
6. Someone may disagree because occasionally people who are considered to be heroes and heroines are not good people.
7. Yes, because one person’s heroes and heroines may not be everyone’s heroes and heroines.

1. I would describe a hero or heroine as someone I look up to or count on--maybe an idol.
ReplyDelete2. I would consider the "character or a society" to be what that society stands for. If there is little crime, great schools, and well-off citizens, the society would have good character. If the society has a high crime rate, drug problem, poor grades in schools, and are generally poorly taken care of citizens, I would characterize that society as having bad character.
3. Our police force, parents, teachers, and political leaders would define her and heroine in my society.
4. I dot agree with this statement.
5. Someone might agree with this statement because if the people in our society we define as heros and heroines have bad character themselves, it would be a fairly good assumption that the society's character is not that great.
6. Someone might disagree with this statement because it is very rare that one person or a handful of people can define a society as a whole.
7. I definitely could argue this statement as being right and wrong.

4. I do agree with it
5. People in societies want to be like their hero/heroine, so if you can see what the heroes are like and what they do, then you can see how the society acts like.
6. Because you cant use one person to define a whole group of people, everyone in a society is different and not all will have the same type of hero.

1. A hero/heroine is a person that helps in a time of need and a person that people respect.
ReplyDelete2. "Character of a society" is what the society thinks are important people in the society.
3. Police officers, Military People, Pastors, and people in the medical profession. Also, in my society my family and friends are heroes and heroines.
4. I agree
5. If the hero is a actor on drugs then that is the way that person wants to be like. If the heroine is a good basketball player then the person looking up to her wants to do whatever it take to be like that person. An individual can just look at society to see who is important at the time.
6. Somebody would probably desagree because not everyone has the same opinions as to who heroes/heroines are.
7. I could agrue this both right and wrong.

1. A hero is a male person that is a good role model and someone you always look up to. a heroine is the same thing just female. My hero is my friend Jared, he is a good role model.
ReplyDelete2. The people who have power but still give to people in need. The people that make good decisions.
3. I think the people who work hard to show others how to be good and not take things for granted. Firemen/women, the military, teachers, good people in general, cancer patients are my heroes.
4.Disagree because everyone has different onions about heroes and heroines. My hero is probably not the same as someone else’s.
5.They would agree because society has a general idea about a hero.
6. Someone's hero could be a drug dealer and that’s not a good character of society.
7. Yes it can be.

1. Hero/Heroine is someone who is symbol of pride for the society. People look up to them. They have qualities and character traits, which every one wants in himself/herself.
ReplyDelete2. The way a society reacts on certain issues, its priorities, norms, culture, and definition of justice determines the character of that society.
3. Leaders - spiritual and political, army, teachers, doctors, and family define heroes and heroine of my society.
4. I agree with the statement.
5. People select a person to be the hero or heroine of that society, on the basis of their qualities. This also means they approve the deeds of the person. Thus some one might agree to the statement, and would take out inferences on the basis of the act of hero or heroine.
6. Selecting a hero or heroine of a society is a subjective thing. People will select their heroes/heroines on the basis of the qualities they find important for them. Judgment of these qualities varies from person to person. Someone might disagree with this statement, as it is hard to define the character of a society on the judgment of few people.
7. Yes, I could argue this statement as being right and wrong.

Heroes and heroines are people who in times of hardship react in a heroic manner. They help people who are in need and have no one else to turn to. Character of society is what people believe is the right and right way to conduct them. The first heroes that come to mind are the people of the feed the children foundation. They feed millions of hungry children in poverty stricken countries. I disagree with this statement because a person can be defined a hero in many different ways. A person might argue this statement as being correct because a person is classified as a hero when they assist other people, and they want to better improve society. A person that disagrees with this statement may possibly make a similar argument as mine. This statement could easily be labeled both right and wrong.
