Wednesday's Assignment - Week One

First, skim through Chapter 13 in your textbook. Near the end of the chapter, there is a page that explains 2 different ways to write a Comparison/Contrast essay: Subject by Subject and Topic by Topic by Topic.

A Subject by Subject comparison/contrast would show the similarities and differences between two "things." (Example: comparing and contrasting Batman and Superman) A Topic by Topic by Topic comparion/contrast would center on three points/topics about 2 subjects. For example, 3 topics about Batman and Superman could be: ability to fly, fighting styles, and origin of character. In each paragraph, the writer would still be comparing Batman to Superman, but he would introduce each body paragraph by discussing the topic, like ability to fly.

Let's try it with two pictures!

For this exercise, take a look at the two photos below. Take several looks, actually. Post a comment below with the following information:
  • List the similarities you see in the two photographs (Use the title Similarities)
  • List the differences you see in the two photographs (Use the title Differences)
  • Explain why the photographs can be compared/contrasted. Why did the photographers take these photos? What is the purpose of the photos.
  • Finally, if you were going to write about these two photos, would you compare these photos using a Subject by Subject comparison/contrast or a Topic by Topic by Topic comparison/contrast? Why would you prefer that style to the other?

Here they are:

Make sure you include your name at the end of the comment so you get credit for answering!

  3. The similarities of the two pictures are that the placement of the people; two males with matching outfitts. One would assume the one standing would be the older brother. There is a much different age group between the two pictures. The top is younger children and the bottom is older adult males. The picture quality is different so one would think the top was an older photo so it could be the older males beneath the picture at a younger age.

  5. Similarities
    In both pictures:
    -There are two males.
-The male on the left it sitting lower than the male on the right.
-The male on the left has lighter hair than the male on the right.
-The males are wearing matching outfits.
-The males on the right have similar facial expressions.
-The male on the left is slightly in front of the male on the right.
    Differences
    -The backgrounds are different.
-The bottom picture has better picture quality than the top picture.
-The males in the bottom picture are a lot older than the males in the top picture.
-The males hand placement is different.
-The male on the left in the top picture isn't smiling, but the male on the left in the bottom picture is smiling.

These pictures can be compared and contrasted because they are very different pictures, but they have some similar aspects. The photographer probably took these pictures as a family photograph, and that pose is a pretty standard pose for two siblings. The purpose of the photos is to provide a family with a photo of the siblings. The pose definately lets you know that they are siblings. The photos are a memory and keepsake of that time in each of the sets of males lives.

If I was going to write an essay on these two photograph, I would use topic by topic. I would prefer this method because most of the similarties and differences can be clumped into two or three topics.

  6. Ok I am going to do this again. Sorry.
Similarites in the 2 pictures are...
    1. both are boys
    2. dressed alike
    3. same hair color
    4. one is in front of the other

Differences in the 2 pictures are...
    1. the first picture the boys are young
the second picture the boys are older
2.the first picture one boy is not smiling
the second picture they both are smiling.
3.the first picture they both are sitting
the second picture 1 is sitting the other one is standing

You can compare and contrast these 2 pictures because they are the same subject matter just older and newer pictures. They have many of the same aspects, but also many different ones.

I would do subject by subject. If I were going to write an essay about these two pictures. I would prefer to write about one of the pictures at a time to describe their similarities and differences.

  7. Similarities:
    Males
    Matching outfits
    Appear to be brothers
The male on the left is sitting lower than the make on the right.
The males on the left have lighter hair then the males on the right.

    Differences:
The top picture is older than the picture on the bottom.
The top picture are kids and the bottom picture are adults.
    The hand placement
    The backgrounds are different

The photographers took this photo probably for memories or for a scrapbook. The purpose of the photos is to have a memory and something to look back on in later years. Subject by Subject is how I would write the essay. I think it would be easier to write because there are so many similarities and differences.

  8. Similarities:
    Placement of kids and men
    Outfits
Left one has lighter hair and the right one has darker
Male on right side appears to be elder
    Differences:
    Age difference
    Facial expressions
Positions (one of the males is standing in the bottom picture)
    Background
Photo might be taken for family album.
Comparison/Contrast can be done as these pictures have some simmilarities and differences.
If I have to write an essay. I will write it in topic by topic because it will be easy to describe the simmilarities and differences under similar headings.

  9. Similarities:
They are both wearing the same clothes in each picture.
They appear to be good friends in each picture.
    Their hair styles are similar.
    Differences:
The top picture is of two kids and the bottom picture is of two adults.
They are wearing different clothes in each photo.
    They have different hair colors.
The photos can be easily compared and contrasted because there are obvious similarities and differences in each photo. The photographer probably took the photo to show how two friends relationship can last all the way through adulthood. The purpose of the photos is to show how people mature from childhood all the way through becoming an adult. I would use a subject by subject comparison and contrast becaused there is only so much you can compare and contrast in these photos.
